Sanofi Pasteur/Crucell H7N1 Vaccine Trials Begin

A phase I clinical trial is reportedly the first to assess safety and efficacy of a split, inactivated prototype pandemic H7N1 vaccine.

Lyon, France - Sanofi pasteur, within the framework of the European Commission's collaborative research project, announced on 19 SEP 2006 that it had generated the first clinical trial lot of a new generation of H7N1 pandemic vaccine. This research is part of an overall pandemic preparedness program begun earlier with H5N1 vaccine research. The H7N1 avian influenza virus struck Italian poultry in 1999. The production uses cell-based technology from Sanofi pasteur partner Crucell N.V.

While both H5 and H7 subtypes have caused human infections in the last three years, H5 has received more attention.
