Integrating Simulation & Gaming: Jain/McLean 2005

Commentary on "Integrated Simulation and Gaming Architecture for Incident Management Training" by Sanjay Jain and Charles R. McLean.

A 2005 analysis by Jain and McLean approaches the problem of training decision makers and responders on the same scenarios by attempting to unify gaming aspects with simulation aspects. The requirements they enumerate for such integration are helpful:
  • Federated simulation and gaming modules
  • Integration among heterogenerous simulation federates modeling interrelated aspects of the emergency event
  • Integration among gaming modules with trainee role-playing within the same locale
  • Synchronization between macro-level modeling of simulation and micro-level modeling of gaming modules
  • Control over execution of both simulation and gaming modules through a training manager console
  • MMOG mode as required to support a large multi-agency incident management exercise
  • Access to heterogenerous data servers for supporting simulation and gaming modules
  • Management of MMOG execution
  • Management of simulation federation execution
  • Reusability of components within both simulation and gaming suites
  • These requirements demonstrate the challenges facing integrated gaming/simulation projects.
